06.01.10 The Raise a Smile Hostel Berlin is open!

The Raise a Smile Hostel in Berlin is now open!

The hostel is very small with only 19 beds and so a very homely place where you meet people easily. We are situated in Friedrichshain, the alternative area of East Berlin. We have a great location with a tram stop right outside the door and loads of great bars and restaurants close by as well as the East side gallery (one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin wall & the only part covered in art by famous artists from all over the world).

Each room in the hostel has been individually designed with a different Zambian animal theme, the common room has been painted by Hamburg artist Michael Göster with tribal African patterns and a huge acacia tree across one wall.

If you would like to make a booking or just find out a little more about the hostel then visit the Raise a Smile Hostel Berlin website.

Remember all profit from the hostel goes to supporting our projects in Zambia.

02.02.09 Grade 7 Exams

We have just received a message from Marco to say that all 7th grade students have passed their final exams and are now able to go to secondary school! This is a remarkable achievement especially when you consider that in Zambia normally only about 60% of pupils pass these exams. The school fees for secondary school are funded through donations. Congratulations!

15.12.08 Sale at Stein High School

With the help of the year 7 students of Stein High School, Raise a Smile hosted a sale of handcrafted products made by Zambia. The sale included stone and wooden animal figures of elephants, rhinos, hopps and lions, as well as cards, fabrics, etc. The students also made cakes to sell. The sale raised a total of €480 which was sent to Magazine Community School. The Children of Magazine Community School sent a thank you letter to Stein High School.

10.12.08 Water in Magazine!

Marco has managed to get a tap attached to the water mains on the school grounds. Previously he had tried to dig a bore hole, but after drilling to a depth of over 90 meters and still finding no water the idea was abandoned. This new tap improves the water situation at the school dramatically. The teachers won’t have to spend hours waiting at the water kiosk to pay for buckets of water, without even any certainty of there being any water left by the time the front of the queue is reached.
