Ngombe Compound, Zambia

N'gombe Compound in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, photographed from a hill. Compounds are normally illegal populated land. Many people move from the countryside to the suburbs of large cities in search of a better life. However, expectations are usually not met and in the compounds unemployment is high and many men spend all day every day drinking.

Chicken in N'gombe Compound

In the compound there is no possibility to get rid of rubbish other than burning it. Therefore it's often thrown on the ground. These chickens are looking for their food in the rubbish, this is the same area that the children play in.

Toilets at the Orphanage

Those are the toilets at the orphanage. During the rainy season there's a corrugated iron roof. The toilets are very basic but will help to stop the spread of cholera. There is an outbreak of cholera almost every year in N'gombe compound.

Broken Water Filter

This is Zacharia standing next to the broken water filter. Water filters like this are filled with stones and sand. It works because a layer of bacteria builds up on the surface of the stones which "eats" the bad bacteria that can cause disease.

The Repaired Water Filter

Water is taken from the well outside and put in the filter. When it comes out of the tap it is put into one of the two storage tanks. Water kept for 24 hours with no sunlight will reduce bacteria by approximately 95%.

Hope and Faith School

Nearly all children from the orphanage attend Hope and Faith School. It is a primary school, which in Zambia go from grade one to seven. The school has a choir which some of the children from the orphanage sing in. The standard of education in developing countries such as Zambia is often very low.

Hope and Faith School

In Zambia children are supposed to start their education in grade one when they are seven years old and progress through one grade per year. However, in most grades there is a huge age range of pupils as with many other developing countries in Africa. Many of the children from the orphanage were unable to go to school before moving tot he orphanage and so are a long way behind in thier education. Because of this many of them take two school grades per year.
